" Diesen Ansatz will Extreme Networks über Elements forcieren.

BILDERGALERIE

" (Bild: Reder / A. Strong)

Why Choose Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series Switches

What Is The Plant Factories

Filo cats far from purring despite shifting plenty more switches in Q1

Switch-making Cisco nemesis Arista Sites has reported a base line expansion in diary Q1 financials, amid demand from hyperscale data centre operators, including Facebook - which recently unveiled a WS-C2960CX-8PC-L switch developed in collaboration with Arista.

The particular company reported revenue of $595. 4m for the three months ended 31 March, an increase of 26 per cent year-on-year, but flat when in contrast to the previous quarter – roughly in collection with expectations.

“In Q1 2019, the cloud titan segment was our most significant vertical, ” Jayshree Ullal, CEO at Arista, said during an earnings call.

This was both a blessing and a bane: Ullal said the company had forecast a slower Q2, since it has already delivered a bunch of kit to their major cloud customers and expects a period of assimilation in the first fifty percent of its financial 2019. Announcement of the approaching slowdown sent shares in a downward spiral – trading 16 per cent lower after normal office hours.

Arista was founded by a trio of former Cisco executives and its head honcho Ullal spent 15 years with Switchzilla, working alongside their long-time CEO John Sections, before switching sides. Arista then promptly started eating into Cisco’s revenue.

The company claimed it lured a list number of million-dollar customers in Q1. Enterprise clients were the second largest customer segment after Rate 1 cloud vendors, adopted by financial organisations ~ the latter category was boosted by the recent acquisition of low-latency switching specialist Metamako. Tier 2 cloud specialty providers and companies came in at fourth and fifth place.

Arista’s products were responsible for $505. 4m in revenue in a quarter, up 24 per cent year-on-year, while services netted $90m in a quarter, up 32. 7 per cent. Nearly three-quarters of the revenue came from the US marketplaces.

“We delivered two major new product announcements during Q1 with 7368 Spline that we developed in close collaboration with Facebook enabling both our flagship EOS as well as Facebook's OS to be supported on the system, ” Ullal said.

“We also introduced the 7130, the first low latency high precision network application system. We're satisfied with the increased acceptance of our own software subscribers with a list quarter for CloudVision having doubled our bookings from Q1 2018. ”

Other numbers integrated:

Total expense of revenue stood at $215m, up from $170m a year ago, resulting in gross profit of $381m.

In words of operating expenses, the company spent $120m on R&D, $51m on sales and marketing, and $15. 5m on administration.

Income from businesses totalled $194m, up from $139m a year ago, and the company earned $12m in “other income”.

Net gain went up to $201m, up from $144. 5m in the same quarter a year ago. Arista finished Q1 with $809m in cash, $3. 3bn in total assets, and $932m in total debts.

The organization has authorised a $1bn stock repurchase programme, that may run until April 2022, funded from working capital.

Arista’s current problems are highlighted in its advice for Q2; the company expects earnings of $600m-$610m, below what was forecasted by analysts - which investors quickly poured cold water over, with stocks sinking rapidly.

“We noticed less than the normal order strength in late 03 and in the 30 days of April, ” Ullal explained. “We are therefore forecasting slower growth in Q2 2019 from our normal and historical designs. Some of the adding reasons for this are one of the substantial cloud titan providers fulfilled in 2018 have generated a period of intake in the first half of 2019. ” ®

Cisco issues critical security alert for Nexus data-center switches

Cisco issued some 40 security advisories today but only one of them was deemed “critical” – a vulnerability in the Cisco Nexus 9000 Collection Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) Mode data-center switch that could let an attacker secretly access system resources.

The exposure, which was given a Common Vulnerability Credit scoring System importance of 9. 8 out of 10, is described as a problem with secure covering (SSH) key-management for the Cisco Nexus 9000 that lets a remote attacker to hook up to the afflicted system with the privileges of a underlying user, Cisco said.

“The vulnerability is due to the existence of the arrears SSH key pair that is present in all devices. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by opening an SSH relationship via IPv6 to a targeted device using the extracted key materials. This specific vulnerability is merely exploitable over IPv6; IPv4 is not vulnerable, " Cisco had written.

This vulnerability impacts Nexus 9000s if they are running a Cisco NX-OS software release prior to 14. 1, and the business said there were no workarounds to address the problem.

However, Cisco has released free software improvements that address the vulnerability.

The company also issued a “high” security alert advisory for the Nexus 9000 that involves an exploit that will let assailants execute arbitrary operating-system commands as root on an afflicted device. To achieve success, an attacker would need appropriate administrator credentials for the product, Cisco said.

The weeknesses is due to extremely broad system-file permissions, Gresca wrote. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by authenticating to an impacted device, creating a crafted control string and writing this crafted string to a specific file location.

[ Prepare to become a Certified Information Security Methods Professional with this thorough online course from PluralSight. Now offering a 10-day free trial! ]

Gresca has released software improvements that address this vulnerability.

Two other vulneraries rated “high” also involved the Nexus 9000:

A weakness in the background-operations functionality of Cisco Nexus 9000 software could allow an authenticated, local attacker to gain elevated privileges as root by using an afflicted device. The vulnerability is credited to insufficient validation of user-supplied files on an influenced device. Cisco said an attacker could take advantage of this vulnerability by signing in to the CLI of the afflicted device and creating a crafted file in a specific directory on the filesystem.

A weak point in the background-operations functionality of the WS-C2960XR-48LPS-I switch software could allow an opponent to login to the CLI of the afflicted device and create a crafted file in a specific directory on the filesystem. The vulnerability is due to insufficient approval of user-supplied files on an influenced device, Gresca said.

Cisco has released software for these weaknesses as well.

Also part of these security signals were a number of “high” rated warnings about vulneraries in Cisco’s FirePower firewall series.

For example Cisco wrote that multiple vulnerabilities in the Storage space Message Block Protocol preprocessor detection engine for Barullo Firepower Threat Defense Software could allow an unauthenticated, adjacent or remote opponent to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition.

Yet another vulnerability in the internal packet-processing functionality of Cisco Firepower software for the Cisco Firepower 2100 Series could let an unauthenticated, remote attacker cause an afflicted device to stop processing traffic, producing in a DOS situation, Cisco said.

THE 400G ETHERNET RAMP ABOUT RADIX AS MUCH AS BANDWIDTH

The appetite for network bandwidth is insatiable, as is that of compute and storage, but our enthusiasm to acquire larger and larger chunks of all of these things is curtailed significantly by cost. If the cost per bit per second comes down fast, and the timing is right, then shifting to a higher bandwidth is relatively easy. This has been happening with 100 Gb/sec Ethernet for more than a year now, and the prospects are pretty high that it will start happening for 400 Gb/sec Ethernet in 2019 and really kick in during 2020.

But this is not just about bandwidth. In some cases, hyperscalers, cloud builders, and HPC centers need more bandwidth, as was the base in the intermediate bump from 10 Gb/sec to 100 Gb/sec, where both Ethernet and InfiniBand took an almost half step at 40 Gb/sec to give the industry time to sort out the signaling and optics that would eventually make 100 Gb/sec more affordable than was originally planned. (You can thank the hyperscalers and their relentless pursuit of Moore’s Law for that.)

In many parts of the networks at hyperscalers, there is a need for more bandwidth, but there is also sometimes a need to solder more ports onto a switch ASIC and thereby increase the radix of the device while at the same time creating flatter topologies, thus eliminating switching devices and therefore costs from the network without sacrificing performance or bandwidth.

All of these issues are in consideration as datacenter networking upstart Arista Networks, which has been making waves for the past decade, is the first out the door with switches that make use of the “Tomahawk-3” StrataXGS switch ASIC from merchant silicon juggernaut Broadcom, which we tore the covers off in January of this year.

The Tomahawk-3 ASICs are the first chips from Broadcom to switch from non-zero return (NRZ) encoding, which encodes one bit per signal, to pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) signaling, and in this case Broadcom has PAM-4 encoding which allows for up to two bits per signal and therefore on signaling lanes that run at a physical 25 Gb/sec, they look like they are running at 50 Gb/sec; if you gang up eight lanes of PAM-4 running at that speed, et voila, you have 400 Gb/sec ports. There are a lot of ways that this top end Tomahawk-3 chip, which has an aggregate of 12.8 Tb/sec of bandwidth across its 256 serializer/deserializer (SerDes) circuits, can have its interfaces carved up to link to the outside world – either natively at the chip or using splitter cables at the port. The Tomahawk-3 can carve down those 256 lanes running at an effective 50 Gb/sec to yield ports running natively at 50 Gb/sec, 100 Gb/sec, 200 Gb/sec, or 400 Gb/sec, or customers can use cable splitters to chop the 400 Gb/sec ports down to two running at 200 Gb/sec or four running at 100 Gb/sec.

There is a second Tomahawk-3 variant, which will have only 160 of its 256 SerDes fired up, that Arista is not yet using, and it will 8 Tb/sec of aggregate switching bandwidth that Broadcom suggests can be carved up into 80 ports at 100 Gb/sec; or 48 ports at 100 Gb/sec plus either 8 ports at 400 Gb/sec or 16 ports at 200 Gb/sec; or 96 ports at 50 Gb/sec plus either 8 ports at 400 Gb/sec or 16 ports at 200 Gb/sec. That 80-port setup is important because that is the server density in a rack of hyperscale-style machines that are based on two-socket server sleds that cram four node into a 2U enclosure and twenty of these into a single rack, for a total of 80 ports. Arista’s initial Tomahawk-3 switches are not making use of this cut-down chip, which is obviously going to be made from partially dudded chips as is common among CPU and GPU chip makers that are pushing the envelope on chip making processes and transistor counts.

A QUICK AND BIG JUMP

The line of switches that Arista builds based on Tomahawk ASICs from Broadcom have seen aggregate switching bandwidth on the ASICs go from 3.2 Tb/sec in 2015 to 6.4 Tb/sec in 2015, which is a normal Moore’s Law kind of pace enabled by the shrink from 28 nanometer processes that could put 128 SerDes running at 25 Gb/sec per lane on the Tomahawk-1 that made it into devices in 2015 to the 16 nanometer processes in the Tomahawk-2 that appeared in the Arista line in 2017 with 64 ports running on 256 SerDes running at 25 Gb/sec per lane.

Google Promises Fix Pixel 2 XL Users Report Voice Messaging Issue

Some Google Pixel 2 XL users have reported a volume flaw that reduces the sound level of audio clips sent through messaging apps such as Google Allo, Instagram, and Telegram among others. Google has acknowledged the issue and is working on a fix. The newest problem notably emerges days after some Pixel 2 and Pixel users complained about a connectivity flaw with mesh routers.

Pixel 2 XL Users Report Voice Messaging Issue, Google Promises Fix

Affected users have reported the voice messaging issue on the Pixel User Community of the Google Product Forums. The users state that when they send a voice clip recorded on a Pixel 2 XL suffering from the bug, the recipient receives the same clip with a minimal volume. The sound level on the receiving device can't be increased even by taking up the level to maximum or by using headphones, as spotted by AndroidPolice. "I experienced the unusually low volume for outgoing voice messages in WhatsApp on two Pixel 2 XLs. The same behaviour was observed with Google Allo voice messages," one of the users who described the issue on Google Product Forums said, adding that the issue doesn't impact the volume in wholesale iPhone 6s Plus LCD screen calls and is absent from the Pixel 2 and older Pixel models.

It appears that the problem with voice messages exists on Pixel 2 XL units running Android 8.0 and Android 8.1. However, we weren't able to replicate the issue on an Android 8.1-running Pixel 2 XL unit of a team member.

Community Manager Orrin Hancock stated in response to user reports that Google is aware of the issue and is looking into it. "Want to let you all know that we are aware of this [issue], and looking into it. I might be reaching out for bug reports and other info privately," he responded.

Last month, Pixel 2 and the first-generation Pixel users reported issues with mesh routers. The issue was mainly bringing frequent disconnects and spontaneous reboot of access points when connected an affected iPhone 6s Plus display with a mesh router. Google assured a fix that is seemingly yet to reach the Pixel units. The Pixel handsets were also in the headlines in the recent past for issues such as speaker distortion and random reboots.

OnePlus 5T Sandstone Variant leaks again before launch

OnePlus is expected to announce a 'Sandstone' variant of the OnePlus 5T on January 5. On Wednesday, just a couple of days before the announcement, the iPhone 6s repair parts maker released a teaser video highlighting users' love for the sandstone back that debuted with the OnePlus One back in 2014.

OnePlus 5T Sandstone Variant Teased Again in New Video Ahead of Expected January 5 Launch

As we mentioned, OnePlus has released a teaser video on its Twitter account that displays comments from various OnePlus phone owners who profess their love for the sandstone back panel, seen on the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2. Some users say that sandstone is the reason they bought a OnePlus phone, while others claim that it is the best experience for anyone with butterfingers. The teaser, however, reveals no details on the release and announcement.

A post on Weibo highlighted the fact that OnePlus would be announcing a new variant of the OnePlus 5T on January 5 in China, with phrases like 'three days left' and 'The Classic returns' mentioned on it. We do not currently know whether the phone will sport a white Sandstone back or a black one. Ever since switching to a metal back with the OnePlus 3, the company hasn't stopped making sandstone cases for its smartphones. The company had teased the Sandstone finish in a video earlier this year as well.

The OnePlus 5T was originally launched in November 2017. The smartphone sports a 6.01-inch full-HD+ (1080x2160 pixels) Full Optic AMOLED display. It comes equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC and 6GB/ 8GB of RAM. The iPhone 6s LCD screen replacement sports a dual rear camera setup with a 16-megapixel primary sensor and a 20-megapixel secondary sensor. There is also a 16-megapixel front sensor for selfies and video calling.

A special Star Wars Limited Edition variant of the OnePlus 5T was launched last month. It features a customised Star Wars design and comes with a textured white back panel.

Nokia 6 (2018) Launch Date leaked by Chinese Retailer

Weeks after its sneak peek via China's TENAA, it is now being reported that HMD Global will launch the Nokia 6 (2018) by as early as this week. A teaser released by Chinese retailer Suning suggests that the successor to the Nokia 6 would debut in the country three days from now - that is, Friday, January 5. Meanwhile, the previously reported TENAA listing has been updated to reveal the key specifications of the Nokia 6 (2018) ahead of its formal launch.

Nanjing-headquartered Suning, which is one of the official retail partners for Nokia iPhone 6 parts in China, released the teaser on Weibo that points to the sooner launch of the Nokia 6 (2018) than what was speculated earlier. The teaser, as spotted by NokiaPowerUser, teaser comes with an image that showsmultiple Nokia phones making a numeric three to point towards the new announcement. Suning's teaser doesn't reveal any details particular to the new Nokia 6. However, the updated TENAA listing does highlight its key specifications.

nokia 6 2018 teaser suning weibo Nokia 6 (2018) Nokia

If we believe the information surfaced on the TENAA site, the Nokia 6 (2018) will feature a 5.5-inch TFT display with 1080x1920 pixels resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. This counters the initial reports that were claiming a full-screen display with 18:9 aspect ratio. Further, the online listing states that the new Nokia handset has an octa-core processor with four cores at a clock speed of 2.2GHz and the other four cores at 1.9GHz, coupled with 4GB of RAM. There are rumours that the chip would be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 - the same that was debuted on the Nokia 7 last year. The smartphone also appears to have a 16-megapixel CMOS camera sensor on the back and an 8-megapixel camera sensor on the front. Also, there is a rear-facing fingerprint sensor, unlike the front-facing one of the original Nokia 6.

The detailed TENAA listing highlights that the Nokia 6 (2018) will come in two storage options - 32GB and 64GB. Both will have microSD card support (up to 128GB) in a hybrid dual-SIM configuration. The smartphone is also listed with connectivity options such as 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS/ A-GPS, and Micro-USB. Similarly, it appears to have a 3000mAh battery and sensors, including ambient light and gravity.

Last month, the TENAA certification of the Nokia 6 (2018) surfaced that confirmed its launch in China. The iPhone 6 spare parts with the model number TA-1054 appears to have aesthetics similar to the last year's Nokia 6. However, as per the images posted on the TENAA site, the new handset would have a camera module similar to the Nokia 5.

Apart from the Nokia 6 (2018), HMD Global is rumoured to have the flagship Nokia 9, Nokia 8 (2018), and Nokia 3310 4G variant in plans for early 2018. A recent report also hinted that the Finnish company is developing the Nokia 4 and Nokia 7 Plus alongside its other new models.

The 9 biggest iPhone X annoyances and how to fix them

So, how are you liking that new iPhone X ($1,149.00 at Apple)? If you're anything like me, you're digging the big screen and fancy camera -- and not digging certain other things.

Indeed, after a couple weeks with Apple's latest, I'm finding myself irritated at times -- in part due to Face ID issues, but also because of other hassles.

Let's take a look at the iPhone X's biggest annoyances and how you can work around them.

Face ID seems to be delayed

Actually, you might just be waiting a little longer than necessary. When you tap or raise the iPhone, or press the wake button on the side, you see a little padlock near the top of the screen. After your face is recognized, the lock opens -- which takes a second or two -- allowing you to swipe up and get to work.

But guess what? You don't have to wait until you see the padlock perform its little animated opening. In my experience, Face ID actually works faster than that, meaning you can swipe up almost immediately after the screen turns on. There may be a split-second delay while Face ID finishes, er, ID-ing, but it definitely eliminates that "padlock pause."

Face ID doesn't work when my phone is on a table

coofun-folding-qi-stand

Instead of putting your iPhone X flat on a table, set it on this folding charge pad -- which will make Face ID recognition a little easier (and charge your iPhone 6 Plus LCD screen ).

Coofun

Arguably the biggest Face ID-fail of all: You can't unlock your iPhone X when it's lying flat on a table -- not without swiping up and then waiting a few seconds for the passcode keypad to appear.

Otherwise, it leads to the inevitable "Face ID frown," which is where you lean awkwardly over the screen and frown at having to do so, thereby reducing the chance Face ID will accurately recognize your face.

If you spend most of your time at a desk, there's a pretty good fix for this problem, one that kills two birds with one stone: Get a Qi charging stand. Not a charging pad, mind you, which keeps your phone sitting flat, but a stand. That way you can position the phone so it's facing your face, and therefore much easier to unlock.

I also recommend a stand that folds, which is better for travel and gives you more flexibility in choosing an angle. For example, this Coofun folding Qi stand -- currently $17.29 from Amazon -- has a foldable design, three charging coils (meaning you can set your iPhone sideways if you prefer) and a 4.1-star average rating.

Notifications are hidden by default

Part and parcel of the Face ID issue is that you can't see notifications at a glance -- not until your face is recognized.

This is a security feature, enabled by default, and some would say it's a smart one. But it can also be incredibly annoying.

Fortunately, it's easy enough to toggle off. Just tap Settings > Notifications > Show Previews, then choose Always. Remember that after doing so, your notifications will appear with previews even when your iPhone 6 Plus LCD screen wholesale is locked.

I miss the Home button!

Could I interest you in a virtual substitute? iOS has long offered this option in the form of AssistiveTouch, but iPhone X users are really embracing it.

The feature adds an omnipresent "soft" button to your screen, one you can drag and drop just about anywhere you like: off to the side, into a corner or right near the bottom where the old Home button used to be.

Even better, it can perform different functions depending on whether you single-tap, double-tap, long-press or 3D Touch. One of those functions is a pop-up menu that can be used to quickly access even more functions (like Control Center, SOS and screenshot).

To enable it, tap Settings > General > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch, then toggle it on. To customize the aforementioned pop-up menu, tap Customize Top Level Menu.

I miss my headphone jack!

OK, so this isn't an iPhone X-specific problem; it's also an iPhone 7($745.00 at Amazon.com) and iPhone 8 ($699.00 at Apple) problem. But if you skipped those two models and came from, say, an iPhone 6 ($320.00 at Amazon.com), the lack of jack can be jarring.

Fortunately, you don't have to give up your favorite headphones; Apple supplies a dongle that lets you plug them into the Lightning port. And because the iPhone X can charge wirelessly, using that dongle doesn't have to be at the expense of charging.

Need a place to keep that little adapter so it's always available? Check out this dongle keychain accessory. Normally I'd also recommend picking up some extra dongles in case yours goes missing, but there are few MFi-certified adapters in the current crop of clones -- most of which have very poor ratings.

There are, of course, other options, including Bluetooth audio adapters, Lightning-compatible headphones and so on. Check them out in this roundup of headphone-jack alternatives (which focuses on the iPhone 7, but definitely applies here as well).
